The Weeknd Donates $1 Million to Coronavirus relief

The Canadian star Weeknd contributed $1 million to coronavirus relief efforts to help the music community and healthcare workers in his hometown. Puza Snigdha reports.

The three-time Grammy award-winning musician The Weeknd has donated $500,000 to MusiCares to give them financial support while music venues remained closed due to the pandemic, as well as $500,000 to the Scarborough Health Network which is dedicated to combatting COVID-19 in his hometown.

The singer said: “I was raised in Scarborough and felt it was important to give back to the community that raised me during the hard times of this pandemic,”

He shared a screenshot of the announcement, writing: “Massive thanks to the fans for buying the xo masks and doing your part in helping fight COVID. I promised to match what was sold. We need to keep fighting. Also a big shout out to everyone in Scarborough!”

“This gift will help our community hospitals continue to deliver exceptional care for the people of Scarborough in the wake of COVID-19, and demonstrates to our courageous staff and physicians that their critical work does not go unnoticed or unappreciated,” said Elizabeth Buller, Scarborough Health Network president and CEO.

Weeknd also donated total amount of $500,000 which was splited between Black Lives Matter Global Network and the Colin Kaepernick Know Your Rights Camp Legal Defense Initiative, as well as $100,000 to National Bail Out.
