Glacier As Big As Britain Is Melting Fast!

The COP 26 meeting in Glasgow finished last month with some new promises while new tension arises for the world.

Thwaites, a glacier in the Antarctic is melting at an alarming rate which’s size is bigger than Great Britain’s.

Scientists and Glaciologists predict, if such a speedy melting process continues, the world will face a dramatic disaster caused by sea-level rise in five years.

Thwaites contribute about 4% of annual global sea-level rise and it contains vast water which is able to raise sea level worldwide by more than half a meter.

“This is staggering. It’s just broken apart. It fell over like a wall and has broken as if into hundreds of thousands of bricks,” said one Glaciologist.

He also addressed that the government should take steps rather than making fake promises and necessary steps should be taken immediately as the same taken on COVID-19.

Not only Thwaites, but several other glaciers are also melting fast in the Antarctic. Scientists told that Thwaites is working as a cork to block other glaciers going into the sea.

“If Thwaites gives away, other glaciers would collapse too, resulting in a catastrophic rise in sea levels and inundation of several small islands and coastal cities,” said a scientist.

Recent research suggests, 1.4mm to 3.6mm water levels rose in the sea between 2006 and 2015 and the rise continues.
