With a Christian record, American pop artist Katy Perry first tried to get into the industry. By the time of her 2008 breakthrough single “I Kissed a Girl” from One of the Boys, her image had undergone a significant transformation. She then went on to dominate the charts with the albums Teenage Dream, Prism, and Witness. In addition, Perry is well-known for her appearance at the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show, her union with comedian Russell Brand, and her appointment as an American Idol judge.

Her parents, who are both preachers, forbade her from listening to any rock or other popular music. According to Perry, who spoke to Entertainment Weekly, “The only things I was allowed to listen to were the Sister Act 1 and 2 soundtracks.” Additionally, she and her two siblings were prohibited from accessing MTV and VH1 on television.

Around the age of nine, Perry began taking singing lessons. By the time she was thirteen, she had mastered the guitar. She started piercing her own nose at this point to fight against her strict upbringing. She quickly developed a passion for pursuing a music career.

Perry traveled to Nashville frequently with her mother to record the 2001 gospel album Katy Hudson. According to Perry, who spoke with Entertainment Weekly, “it reached literally maybe 100 individuals, and then the label went bankrupt.

Perry was exposed to different musical influences while she was a teenager. She was exposed to Queen music by a friend, and the band is still one of her favorites. She told fashion publication WWD, “I’m tremendously influenced by Freddie Mercury and how showy and theatrical he was.
