Trump impeachment Trial: What you need to know!

A month has passed since a violent mob broke into the U.S Capitol under the instigated of Donald Trump. The attack left five people dead and prompted the lawmakers to impeach Trump for the second time, making American History.

We bring you the primer of the Trial:

  • So what is the charge against Donald Trump? Trump is facing a single charge of “incitement of insurrection”. His monthslong campaign of lies and seeding rumors to discredit the election led his followers to attach the Capitol. By doing this Trump has committed “high crimes and misdemeanor” which is an impeachable offense under the U.S. Constitution.
  • It is unclear how long this trial may last. However, Democrats are aiming for a short proceeding of a week or two. This is because they want to move to urgent matters in hand. Tom Carper, Democratic Senator of Delaware reported that the trial should “not take months or weeks but days.”
  • According to the U.S. Constitution, the Chief Justice of America is required to preside the proceedings of Impeachment trials of a sitting president. Since Donald Trump is no longer the president, The most senior Democrat, and the Senate’s President Pro tempore, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont will preside over his trial.
  • Speaker Nancy Pelosi will select nine Democratic members of the house to serve as house managers and present the charges against Donald Trump. Amongst them will be Rakin, the lead house manager who helped author the article of the impeachment.
  • Donald Trump’s defense team will be lead by two Veteran lawyers; Schoen and Castor. Last week Trump’s first defense team quit after a disagreement with him. This led him with no other choice but to bring new defense lawyers on board at the last minute.
  • 100 members of the Senate will serve as jurors throughout the trial and they will vote whether Trump should be convicted to acquitted. Moreover, there will not be any witnesses for the Senate trial.

If Trump is not convicted, democrats are more likely to pass a “censure” or invoke the 14th Amendment to the Constitution and have him disqualified forever from holding the office in the foreseeable future.
