Saturday Special: In Conversation with Shamim Hasan Sarkar

Shamim Hasan Sarkar has established himself as the first Youtuber of Bangladesh. Widely known for his witty skits, dramas and songs, this multitalented artist spoke to us about what it is to be a youtube celebrity and the responsibilites that come with the title and fame.

Whatson editor Sanjida Tanmoy caught up with this multi-talented artist and asked about how he has spent his time during this pandemic? Shamim said, “Life has become different for everybody. Last year was so bad, people lived in a dead panic all over the world, especially in developed countries surprisingly. It changed everything…. Everybody asks me about making funny videos but you know so many people died that I couldn’t bring myself to create new youtube content?”

He added, Last year I did not do any acting because I wanted to raise awareness about the pandemic and the importance of social distancing.. So. If I went to work outside, that would give my fans the wrong impression. So, I stayed away from shooting back at home.

Every famous Youtuber have their unique stories on how they embarked on their journey. Shamim had his own. He shared his story on how everything started for him. He said, Back in 2001 when I was in class 7 my friends told the senior that I sang well and was a good actor. My senior brothers from cadet college convinced me to do a few acts to entertain them. I participated in the cultural program where I won the first prize for singing and the second prize for acting. That is how everything started. I was influenced by world-famous YouTubers like Mayan. Nigga Higa. Soon my channel took off with my funny contents such as, “osthir musicians” and “osthir journalism” being liked by thousands.

Shamim Hasan Sarkar left the country to become an engineer, then he became a YouTuber and finally a musician. Throughout his journey, he had his parent’s support with him. He said, ” I promised my parents that I will be famous through my acting talent and try my best to make my mark in this industry. I asked them to have faith in me”.

Shamim aims to work to create a better society for the underprivileged. He said, “I have a long-term plan to provide food and education to the street children once my Mango Squad project becomes successful.”

The dynamics of Youtubers are changing in Bangladesh. Their contents are being scrutinized and they often face severe internet bullies. More than just funny skits, the youth look upon them to be the role models to represent the nation, to be the voice, and to raise awareness. Shamim said how important it is for YouTubers ” to ensure they won’t be a bad influence to the next generation.”

He also talked about how he manages to be a muti-artist and said, “Acting is acting…sometimes it varies for the setup, camera, and others things but always remember acting is acting.”

Shamim is working ” on a piece of music for next eid and it has already been finalized”. He also said that “if I get a break from my eid shooting I will make some more enjoyable youtube content.”
