Sagar Runi case rolls into the 9th year: Will justice be served?

Nine Years have passed since the brutal killing of the journalist couple Sagar and Runi. The motives behind their murder still remain shrouded in mystery. No progress has been made over the past nine years. Anika Khan reports.

On 11 February 2012, Meherun Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, and Sagar Sarwar, a news editor at Maasranga TV Channel were found dead in their residence at Raza Bazar, Dhaka. Their son, Megh who was five years old then was spared to witness the horror and live with it for the rest of his life.

Hours after the gruesome incident back in 2012, former Home minister Sahara Khatun set a 48-hour time frame to arrest the killer of the couple. As those 48 turned into nine years, families and colleagues of Sagar-Runi doubt whether they will ever find justice for their loved ones. They have expressed their disappointment in the country’s justice system and the lack of progress by the Rapid Action battalion who have been repeatedly asking for more time to investigate the case.

Mursalin who was the former Senior reporter of Daily Samakal and now the president of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has been leading the movement demanding justice for Sagar Runi. Mursalin said, “We are not satisfied as RAB is yet to make any visible headway in the case over the years in finding out the motive of the case or the culprits who committed the crime.” He also added his suspicion of whether the case will ever be solved and demanded, ” immediate completion of the probe by identifying the culprits and ensuring exemplary punishment for them.”

The murder of Sagar-Runi triggered a nationwide public outcry and evoked questions about the secrets that they might have known.

On Thursday, DRU organized protest rallies to demand justice for the journalist couple. Joining the forefront of the protest was Megh.

Nine years have passed and their Son still doesn’t know the killers of his parents or the motive behind their deaths. The case remains at the same stage as it was the day it was filed. As their killers roam free, the very notion of justice ceases to exist.
