Globally, it is estimated that dyslexia occurs in at least 1 in 10 people, putting more than 700 million children and adults worldwide at risk of life-long illiteracy and social exclusion (Dyslexia International, 2017). People with dyslexia often have other conditions, including dyscalculia (difficulties with numbers), ADD (attention deficit disorder), and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning difficulty which is primarily affects reading and writing skills. However, it does not only affect these skills. Dyslexia is actually about information processing. Dyslexic people may have difficulty processing and remembering information they see and hear, which can affect learning and the acquisition of literacy skills. Dyslexia can also impact other areas such as organizational skills.
It is important to remember that there are positives to thinking differently. Many dyslexic people show strengths in areas such as reasoning and in visual and creative fields.
