Blossoms ‘Live from London’: Concert Review

Christmas atmosphere and music cheer lit up the O2 Academy in Brixton on Thursday night as the indie-pop band Blossoms performed their first-ever virtual gig. Poppy Huggett reports.

Fans saw the five-piece gang: Tom Ogden, Charlie Salt, Myles Kellock, Joe Donovan, and Josh Dewhurst return to their beloved instruments and put on a show you’d have trouble forgetting.

Since the beginning of Blossom’s career in 2013, they have continually created music great enough to get your head bopping and your toes wriggling.  The band has created three exhilarating albums, sold-out tour venues, and performed at the UK’S biggest festivals. And now they’ve done something a little different to what they’re used to… A virtual concert fans viewed from the comfort of their own homes.

The latest livestream technology, Melody VR, allowed fans to virtually join the band on stage, choosing from multiple camera angles, and getting a 360° view of the action.

The first glimpse of the set saw fairy lights surrounding the stage from the ceiling to the floor, perfectly divided from one band member to the other. Floor lamps and comfy sofas were scattered around the set to give off a relaxing and pleasing vibe, similar to their music.

Blossoms kicked off the performance with an acoustic version of ‘Blown Rose’ which mellowly introduced the musical journey ahead. The song faded effortlessly into their uplifting hit from Foolish Loving Spaces: ‘The Keeper’.

Blossoms gave an intense, electrifying performance with their hit singles ‘Your Girlfriend’, ‘There’s A Reason Why’ and ‘Gettaway’. The phenomenal set list performed was a combination of synthesized piano beats and modern indie-pop guitar chords, especially the vibrant performance of ‘Oh No (I think I’m In Love)’.

Fans at home even caught a glimpse of Father Christmas, who was delivering instruments to the band prior to the performance of their two festive singles ‘Christmas Eve (Soul Purpose)’ and ‘It’s Going To Be A Cold Winter’.

Tom, who’s live vocals sound almost identical to his vocals on the track, has an undeniably fascinating way about him. His dance moves throughout the set were bohemian and unique, giving it the entertainment fans long for at concerts.

The band ended the spectacular gig with their hit single ‘Charlemagne’ and a message to fans to “Have a Happy Christmas”.

The overall performance was a fantastic mixture of thriving guitar riffs and Tom Ogden’s Britpop vocals that are consistently dazzling. Blossoms charming and refreshing aura combined with their musical talents are the reason why they’re forever succeeding and becoming a huge crowd favorite in the UK.
