BBC launches star-filled education service for children in lockdown

From Monday 20 April, the BBC is launching an education service for children that are currently at home as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This service will be hosted by an array of famous faces who have been recruited as part of the corporation’s largest-ever education offer, BBC Bitesize Daily. This marks the BBC’s effort to fulfil its role as a public service during a time of national crisis and when it is greatly needed by the British public.

Some of the famous tutors that will have a starring role in the summer timetable include; footballer Sergio Agüero who will be hosting Spanish lessons, Danny Dyer who will be taking over history and Brit award-winning singer Mabel on music. Other tutors offering their expertise on this 14-week programme include physicist Brain Cox who will be delivering science lessons, David Attenborough who will teach children about the natural world, and TV presenter Anita Rani who will be reading books aimed at primary and secondary pupils.

While the lineup is indeed intended to create excitement about this service, it also has a much more serious intention: to provide a comprehensive package for school pupils of all ages to support the current resources and online lessons that schools are providing for their students.

The programme has been developed over the last four weeks with educational professionals, and the celebrity tutors will be supported by 200 “real” teachers, both on and off-screen.

BBC Bitesize Daily will be available across BBC iPlayer, Red Button, the BBC Bitesize website and app and BBC Sounds. BBC Four will also be devoting a block of programming each weekday evening for programmes designed to support GCSE and A-level studies.
