A total of 1642 Rohingya’s have been relocated to Bhashan Char, an island in the Bay of Bengal in Noakhali. Anika Khan reports.
- Seven vessels carrying 1642 Rohingyas set ashore from Chittagong to Bhashan Char. Earlier on Thursday; these people reached Chittagong from Cox’s Bazar where they have been staying as refugees since 2017.
- In 2017, more than 750,000 Rohingyas fled from the brutal military campaign in Myanmar Rakhine state, crossed the ocean, and took shelter in Bangladesh.
- In order to provide housing for these people, Bangladesh Navy invested Taka 3100 crore of public money. Since 2017 they have been relocated to Cox’s Bazaar.
- As of now, Bangladesh holds the largest refugee camp in the world.
- There have been plans to relocate them to somewhere less crowded to facilitate them with better housing and living standards.
- The process of relocating Rohingyas from the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar to Bhashan Char has officially started.
- The UN and other various organizations have alleged the Bangladesh government for not making the details about these movements transparent.
- They have been questioning the idea of relocating to a low-lying isolated land that has risks of flooding and strong storms.
- The UN has urged the government to make the relocation voluntary and ensure all necessary measures are being taken.
It will be a long journey for these people until they find a place to call their home.
