DATES

Apr 21-May 20, 2023

Opening Reception: Apr 20, 2023

The title of the show speaks to the constantly shifting connection between one’s view of oneself and the outside world. Which Cantons characterizes as a continuous rewriting and readjusting of conceptions of truth plus awareness. According to Cantons, “Almost nothing is fixed. Each is a moving target, & anything may change it.” Good Fortune / An October Flush is an autobiography that documents the early phases of cosmetic surgery recuperation. Here, the artist considers the “fortune” of life-changing surgery, while the burgeoning bruises and scars reveal a visceral understanding of mortality’s frailty.

Cantons conclude, “I find it related to grasping the moment itself; an act of belief.”

Ayanfe Olarinde, a 1996-born artist residing in Lagos, gets a solo exhibition titled ‘In The Beginning And So It Goes…’ Which will debut at JD Malat Gallery soon. This art exhibition will be on view from 13 April – 6 May 2023. This provides a visual narrative of Yoruba mythical customs. And one of the most well-known & well-recognized civilizations in Nigeria & West Africa. Olarinde’s paintings prompt inquiries & pique interest while providing a pause to consider the mutability of art and life. However, this actually takes audiences through an expedition of learning and enlightenment.

As Ayanfe Olarinde points out, a painting is never fully done; rather, it acts as an interval in the artist’s continual dialogue with the outside world.
