What is happening in Myanmar?

After detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other politicians of the ruling party, Myanmar’s military declared a state of emergency. Civilians are fearing that Myanmar will return to a military dictatorship. Anika khan reports.

Here is everything you need to know about the political unrest taking place in Myanmar:

  • On Monday, 45 people of the National Leading party were reportedly detained by the Myanmar military. The army officials reported that this was done in the response to the Voter fraud that took place in the general elections last November.
  • Civilian leaders and activists have urged the public to come down the street to protest against the military detention of the ruling party members and taking over the power of the country by force.
  • Unverified statements from Aung San Suu Kyi revealed that the military who ruled Myanmar for more than fifty years was trying to reimpose a dictatorship. She said, “I urge people not to accept this, to respond and wholeheartedly to protest against the coup by the military.”
  • The world leaders have condemned the actions taken by the military in Myanmar. Joe Biden has called on the international community to press the Military to give up power and urged to release the detainees as well as refrain from violence against the country’s civilians.
  • The mobile internet services went down and the telephone lines were cut in many areas on Monday. This was done to stop the media from reporting what is happening in Myanmar to the rest of the world.

In a moving speech addressing the issue, President Joe Biden said:

“In a democracy, force should never seek to overrule the will of the people or attempt to erase the outcome of a credible election”.
