Virago

Combining dance with digital technology to deliver a completely new experience, Sonia Sabri presents Virago, a new project exploring the perceptions and misconceptions of the female body.
Virago is a solo-dance project put together by Sonia Sabri, the artistic director of SSCo, co-produced with mac birmingham and The Old Rep Birmingham
In addition to the dancer’s unique ‘urban Kathak’ language, motion-triggered digital art and a soundtrack that combines both spoken word and music come together to look at light vs dark, and real vs fairytale versions of female existence.
Even the name itself carries a double meaning and different cultural contexts. ‘Virago’ means female warrior in Latin, and ‘vira’ means the brave one in Hindi. Sabri looks to incorporate Indian and British culture in her projects, and the rich possibilities that arise when they meet.
Virago comes to the Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham at 7.30pm on Thursday, February 15.
The performance will also be shown on Wednesday, March 7, in Artrix, Bromsgrove; on Saturday, March 10, in Eastwood Park, Giffnock, and on Friday, March 23, at the Swindon Dance.
