US President Donald Trump will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on June 12, marking the first-ever face-to-face engagement between the serving presidents of the two countries.
“We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!” the president tweeted. The Singaporean ministry of foreign affairs confirmed the time and place of the meeting in a statement to sent to press, adding that they are “pleased to host the meeting.”
Trump’s optimism about the meeting, which would be the first between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader, echoed statements made during the overnight made-for-TV arrival of the formerly captive Americans.
“We are starting off on a new footing — I really think we have a very good chance of doing something very meaningful. A lot of very good things have happened,” Trump said as he greeted the former prisoners at Joint Base Andrews early Thursday morning.
Singapore, as a safe alternative, a wealthy authoritarian city-state in Southeast Asia, makes a lot of sense as a location for the historic summit. It also the ability to impose strict crowd control.
