May Day is mainly known as ‘Labor Day’ or ‘Workers’ Day’. For establishing the ethic leaders of the socialists called for a Global Day of Protest for an eight-hour workday. They were fighting for workers who were suppressed by the high-class business class. In the late 19th century socialists internationally decided to raise this point and called for a strike and protest on May 1, 1890. From then this day got the tag as an international workers’ day. The day revitalizing day by day in the US over the year. Apart from May Day, this day has been also celebrated as another day all over the world.

Some curious traditions that are celebrated on the same day are listed below

Celtic Festival & Germanic Festival

Fact side of this day is previously in pre-Christian times this day was peaked to celebrate as a Pagan Festival. In the Middle Age, it got the notice to celebrate the day. The date was also associated with another festival called the Celtic festival of Beltane, which was celebrated to honor Flora, the Roman Goddess of the flower. On the same day, another festival was celebrated named Walpurgis Night and it’s a Germanic festival.

Maypole Dance

The first May reach the attraction for its medieval tradition called ‘Maypole Dance’. This custom is continuously practiced by the fair young maidens. Young girls wave together circularly in a pattern of the ribbons covering the decorated pole. This ribbon dance is mainly celebrated by pre-Columbian Latin America and lately joined into Hispanic ritual dances. There are used some traditional flowers for the festival named Lily of the valley and Hawthorne.

Femininity and masculinity

The pole around where the dance occurs is traditionally made of maple, Hawthorn, and birch. The community men select the straightest and tallest tree to make the pole and place it in the middle of the village green. The flower and ribbon are the symbols of femininity and the pole indicates masculinity.

In Hawaii, May Day is known as Lei Day since 1928. Its mainly known as a spring celebration in the Lei. The Hawaii hula song ‘May Day is Lei Day In Hawaii’ was before selected as their holiday song. The Hawaiian folks particularly embrace the culture broadly, specifically in Lei.

May Day Baskets is a forgotten tradition that faded since the late 20th century. This tradition includes small baskets of sweets and flowers left on neighbors’ doorsteps to delight them. It’s a way of strengthening bonding between both neighbors and cheering them up.
