05. Unholy

The majority of pop musician Sam Smith’s songs are depressing piano ballads about his former male loves, if you are familiar with him. Not this time though. His most recent song, “unholy” (co-written with German singer Kim Petras), represents a significant change.

This song, which has Arabic undertones and centers on a husband and his unrepentant promiscuity against his wife, introduces a new level of sexual deviance to Smith’s audience.

The song is a throwback to the golden age of pop music in the late ’80s and early ’90s, when performers had big singles that were both danceable and vocally stunning, and the production quality was highly deliberate.
