Monochrome themed fashion dominated the award ceremony on Sunday night, as politics remained fashionable for celebrities at the 2018 Grammy’s Award Ceremony.
Stars including Lady GaGa, Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey turned out on the Grammys red carpet this Sunday displaying white roses in solidarity with the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements against sexual misconduct ahead of music’s biggest night and what is usually the wildest display of fashion during awards season.
“It represents hope and peace and sympathy and resistance, and I thought those were very lovely things for every human to encompass and to also share with others,” singer Kelly Clarkson said on the red carpet about the symbolism of the white rose.
Clarkson’s black gown was embellished in silver and gold. Her white rose was long stemmed and she carried it as opposed to pinning it on. Miley Cyrus also opted for the long-stem rose option to go with her black, skinny-legged trouser look.
Many women also went for black, both edgy and chic. Gaga was in a black lace top and leggings with a full skirt and train, white rose in place and her hair swept into a fishtail braid with black lacing. Her signature towering platform shoes — black boots this time around— were on her feet.
However, it wasn’t just female celebrities who turned out in full force in support of this spectacular demonstration, male celebrities such as Sam Smith, Nick Jonas, Rick Ross and rapper K.Flay (amongst many others) all opted for a black tuxedo with a white rose combination.
White roses might be more discreet, and politics might have been less in the foreground for fashion at the Grammys, but the 2018 red carpet remains a place where protest can be signposted. Let’s just hope this continued support for female’s rights is actually being taken seriously and changes in Hollywood will be taken place.
