Sunday Social: The Mental Effects of COVID

As a Nation we’re all Aware of the Physical Effects of COVID, but it’s Also the Effects on us Mentally That are Just as Draining

Now we’ve seen it all in the news bulletins on TV and heard it on the radio about how physically draining suffering from COVID can be, but what we have also got to remember is just how draining it can be on us mentally as well. And take it from someone who knows.
Yes, I am referring to myself, as last month I suffered with COVID for ten days it was heinous.
It started off with a temperature, followed by a cough, loss of appetite and problems sleeping as I was just so warm and coughing every so often. The mental effects were that I was left feeling completely exhausted and just not willing to get up, and if I did manage to get back myself out of bed all I wanted to do was just sit down again after a few minutes. I didn’t even feel much like eating and when I did it was only very small amounts.
Now imagine going through that for ten whole days, absolutely horrific. Another thing I have noticed is that I have also lost a bit of weight, and one of the ways I have noticed this is not by going on the scales but by noticing how my face was gradually thinning and how some of my clothes were getting baggier.
Now you know how it affected me physically, here’s how it affected me mentally; I felt emotionally drained and tired all the time, I also felt completely down more often than not.
Basically, you feel like you are just drained of all of your energy and that you just feel too tired to do anything. And also, you’ve got to content with the symptoms as well. It’s just completely exhausting.
That is just how I felt for those ten days whilst self-isolating with COVID, and I’m pretty sure that I wasn’t the only one.
Thankfully I’ve since made progress whilst on the road to recovery, and even though the temperature’s now back to normal, the persistent cough has reduced and my appetite’s now back to normal I’m still dealing with residual effects.
Overall, it is a stark reminder that even though a great many of us have suffered with the virus, including yours truly, though there are the effects it has on us physically there are also the effects it has on us mentally. You simply don’t have the mentality to do anything. Even the recovery process can be just as trying on your mindset as it can be on your physical being.
Even after I begin making progress with my recovery and as my health starts to return to normal, I have still got a way to go yet.
