Hulu has released the trailer for The First, the next project from Beau Willimon since he departed Netflix’s House of Cards, starring Sean Penn as astronaut Tom Hagerty, part of the first manned mission to visit Mars. The eight-part limited series is a co-production between Hulu and Channel 4.
Sean Penn is about to go where he has never gone before in the official teaser trailer. It features Penn’s inspirational dialogue which will no doubt be a centerpiece of the dramatic struggle to get to Mars. In the clip, the actor is about to embark on a mission to Mars that is going to “cost” him something.
The near-future drama, set in New Orleans in 2031, is about a crew of astronauts attempting to become the first humans on Mars. Under the direction of visionary aerospace magnate Laz Ingram (Natascha McElhone), the crew contends with peril and personal sacrifice as they undertake the greatest pioneering feat in human history.
Star Sean Penn is primarily a film actor, having earned Best Lead Actor Oscar wins for roles in 2008’s Milk and 2004’s Mystic River, as well as nominations for 2001’s I Am Sam, 1999’s Sweet and Lowdown and 1995’s Dead Man Walking.
It won’t be Penn’s television first, since his earliest of roles were actually on television in low-profile 1970s-era guest spots on Little House on the Prairie and Barnaby Jones.
Aside from the two-time Academy Award winner and Natascha McElhone, Willimon has lined up an impressive cast for his new series that includes Melissa George, LisaGay Hamilton, Hannah Ware, James Ransone, and Bill Camp.
The First premieres Friday, 14 September on Hulu.
