The Bangladesh government has recently taken a decision of closing state-owned jute mills all across the country. This gave rise to protests from the Bangladesh Krisak Samity who rallied in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Saturday. Anika Khan reports.

Different organizations and political parties condemned this decision and has called upon Awami League government demanding the withdrawal of this decision.

They have highlighted the concern on how the spirit of our liberation war goes against the idea of handing the jute- industries to the private sectors.

On 2nd of July, the government decided to close roughly 25 of the state-owned jute mills that have been recorded in recurring huge losses throughout the year.

Some progressive organizations, along with the Communist Party of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Khetmajur Samiti, were present in the rallies around Shah Bagh.

Ahsan Habib Lablu (Central leader of the party) has said on how this denationalization will lead to the looting of these mills. He rather urges the government to invest in new types of machinery rather than shifting the administration to corrupted holders.

Ruhin Hossain Price (a member of the Central leader party) spoke on this issue stating how this decision will change the fate of over 50 lakh workers who work on these mills.

General secretary Sajjad Zahir Chandan chaired the rally. NAP chairman Jebel Rahman Gani, secretary general M Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan , Zahhid Hossain Khan, and many more political faces were leading the protests to press home their demands.

As of now, there have been no withdrawal of the decision taken my the government.
