Oscar nominations 2021: Diversity and female directors rewarded

Nominations for 93rd Academy Awards were announced Monday morning and women fared well. Husband and wife stars Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas announced the nominations live from London.

8 takeaways from the Oscar nominations:

  • Seventy women received a total 76 nominations, according to the Academy, a record for a given year.
  • Two female directors – Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell – are in the running for the best director prize at this year’s Oscars; the first time more than one woman has been in contention for the award.
  • Nine of the acting nominees are people of colour, compared with one (Harriet’s Cynthia Erivo) in 2020. Riz Ahmed (for Sound of Metal), Steven Yeun (Minari) and Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) join Oldman and Anthony Hopkins (for The Father) in the best actor race.
  • This is the first year two actors of Asian heritage have featured in the leading man category. In another milestone, Ahmed is the first Muslim actor to receive a nomination for best actor.
  • Sacha Baron Cohen, Carey Mulligan, Olivia Colman, Daniel Kaluuya and Sir Anthony Hopkins are among the British stars nominated for this year’s Oscars. Vanessa Kirby, Gary Oldman and Riz Ahmed are among the other UK nominees.
  • Mank is the most-nominated film, with 10 nods. It is nominated for best film, best director, original screenplay, leading actor and supporting actress (for Amanda Seyfried), costume design, production design, score, cinematography and makeup.
  • Netflix Inc led all outlets with 35 nods after a year in which the coronavirus pandemic saw movie studios delay scores of new releases or send them to streaming platforms.
  • The 73-year-old Glenn Close has her eighth Oscar nomination for playing a foul-mouthed, prosthetic-nosed grandmother in Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy. “I dedicate this honour to all the grandmothers in the world who fight to give their children a better life,” she said.

The leading nominees:

10 nominations – Mank

6 – The Father

6 – Judas and the Black Messiah

6 – Minari

6 – Nomadland

6 – Sound of Metal

6 – The Trial of the Chicago 7

The 93rd Academy Awards will take place in-person from multiple locations, including the Dolby Theatre, on April 25.
