On August 20, Olivia Wilde tagged a report from Deadline and captioned it with only a spider emoji.
The actor and director of Booksmart has signed a deal to direct a new Marvel film in conjunction with Sony Pictures. The film will feature a string of women in the driving seats. The script will be in the hands of Katie Silberman while Amy Pascal will produce, and the executive production will fall to Rachel O’Connor. Wilde, Silberman and Pascal already have a strong bond and the three are also working on a christmas film at Universal.
The Spider-Woman title has been held by several Marvel Comics characters throughout the years, starting with Jessica Drew in the 1970s has gained her powers after her dad injected her with spider blood. However, it hasn’t been confirmed which direction the studio will go with the film.
The movie marks the second Marvel project at Sony to be based around a female character. Sony is also developing Black Cat and Silver Sable movies and is making the effort to diversify the universe.
What’s next for Marvel will be Black Widow, which is set to be released in October having been delayed back in May.
