2020 has been a great year for female pop music – here are five of the best female albums released this year that you may have missed.
Rina Sawayama released her debut album ‘SAWAYAMA’ in April this year to critical acclaim. Her mix of pop, rock, and electronic music created an album quite unlike most other albums – she proved she could do multiple genres within the 13 tracks, and yet this album still feels cohesive. Elton John named this album his favorite of the year so far, and I agree.

In April 2020, Charli XCX announced via a Zoom call with fans that she would be creating an entire album in lockdown over six weeks. Six weeks later and Charli released this incredible album in May of this year. The album perfectly summarises her feelings of the current pandemic and gives fans a glimpse into a relationship under strain.

2020 has been a huge year for Chloe x Halle, releasing their second album ‘Ungodly Hour’ in June. The album features R&B beats with the pairs perfect, glossy harmonies sitting just right over the top. Chloe x Halle are stars on the rise, and this album continues to prove they are here to stay.

YouTuber-turned-popstar Poppy released her third studio album ‘I Disagree’ at the very start of January 2020. The new heavy metal direction of Poppy’s music has been hinted at on her previous releases, but on this album it feels like she fully embraces the sound for the first time. Her fuse of pop melodies and rock instrumentals truly feel unique.

Allie X is a popstar on the cusp of huge success. Her album ‘Cape God’ released in February 2020 is full of catchy pop melodies that will remain in your head for days to come. With Troye Sivan and Mitski featuring on some of the brilliant tracks, Allie X proves she is a pop powerhouse.
