Music Monday: Top Music selections of the week!

This week WhatsOn editors bring you the top 4 pieces of music for listening to this week from the whole month of March. Make sure to add them to your playlist!

The Kut – Satellite

From up-and-coming British singer-songwriter and musician who’s better known by her stage name, Kut. For a single, it’s a rather interesting one in that it’s about the relations between people and how their feelings, the way it affects them. When you listen to the lyrics they are really deep and reach somewhat personal levels, and of course, the very power of those emotions

“YOUR LOVE COULD STOP THE RAIN FROM FALLING”

As a singer, Kut’s voice slices straight through the music and you can feel the strength of what she says when it comes out of her. Her voice doesn’t sound like you’d think it would if you took her appearance at face value. If anything, she’s in a similar musical vein to Paramore’s front-woman Haley. Even the video has some depth

Hannah Schneider – Mirror Sphere

Hannah has released an absolute corker of a song here with her new single, ‘Mirror Sphere’, and it comes from a deep, deep place. Mirror was written during a dark period during the Covid pandemic when all casual human contact was cut down to a bare minimum. For this song, Hannah has taken things right back to the beginning of things and has used sounds reminiscent of 80’s electro-pop and soul. Vocally, her voice is in a similar vein to Kate Bush and Alison Goldfrapp in that it carries emotion without being too dramatic whilst still wearing her heart on her sleeve.

“It’s been a long day/it’s been a painful time

But my heart is open/my heart is open”

Flox – Smoke Grass

A great track with a nod back to Reggie and some of the culture surrounding it, and of course with lyrics that talk about weed and youth. Grass has a steady drumbeat that goes into a composed rhythm with an additional bass giving it. This is a song that you could just listen to on a loop and still find cheery in its rhythm. Now what’s clever about the song is that even though smoking weed is referenced frequently it’s not actually about that. If you listen carefully, it’s about maintaining your individuality and privacy whilst also standing your ground both politically and philosophically.

“FREEDOM OF THOUGHT IS SOMETHING I THOUGHT I’D FALL THROUGH THE SKY FOR/BUT WEED IS JUST SOMETHING I GET HIGH FOR”

Bananarama – Venus

An iconic 80’s dance update on a 60’s rock classic and definitely one for a women’s night out. Sassy and bold lyrics and a reference to women being in control of themselves and having men practically go wild for them.
