London South Bank University Celebrates LGBT History Month

London South Bank University is joining in with this month’s LGBT History Month celebrations which are looking to raise awareness of issues affecting the LGBT community.
Activists and experts involved in the campaign for LGBT rights will be participating in a Global Panel Discussion on the 15 Feb that will be looking into the issues that staff and students who are members of the LGBT community have to face when travelling abroad.
One of the participants in the debate is Emma Scott, Director of International SOS. International SOS will be working with LSBU to provide medical and security advice for those travelling abroad.
It is important that members of LGBT communities and travel buddies are aware of the sentiment towards LGBT people in the countries they are visiting.
The partnership will be providing them with advice before they leave, will be monitoring them while they’re away and updating them on possible dangers and will also provide them with support once they return.
Activist Peter Tatchell will be participating in the debate and talking about human rights. “Raising awareness about international homophobia, biphobia and transphobia is important. We need show solidarity and work with local activists to secure solutions to worldwide anti-LGBTI oppression”, said Tatchell.
“This debate is critical at this time as this isn’t just an issue for LGBT staff and students, but also for any colleagues travelling with them abroad, as individuals can also be put in a vulnerable position, as they can be ‘outed’ on a trip accidently”, said Penny Green, Head of Procurement Services at LSBU.
“It’s important for staff and students to be aware of cultural sensitivities when they travel. This panel discussion will help raise awareness and engagement with these important issues.”
