Jerusalem violence: 24 dead in Gaza

After weeks of intense violence in Jerusalem, Twenty-four people, including nine children, have died in Gaza, the enclave’s health ministry has announced.

Israel’s army on Monday said it launched airstrikes on Gaza in response to rockets fired by Hamas militants. Health officials said, seven members of a single family, including three children, had died in an explosion in Gaza. The reason behind the blast, it had been not clear how it occurred by Israeli airstrike or rocket that landed short.

Israel’s military informed it had killed 15 Hamas operatives and a Hamas battalion commander. Israeli medics reported six Israeli civilians were hurt by rocket fire, including wounded from broken glass and shrapnel.

Meanwhile, anger had been mounting for weeks among Palestinians around an Israeli court case on whether Israeli authorities are ready to evict dozens of Palestinians from a Jerusalem neighborhood and provide their homes to Jewish settlers.

During a statement, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said on Tuesday that “the rocket attacks would continue until Israel stops all scenes of terrorism and aggression in Jerusalem and al-Aqsa mosque.”
