Jeremy Corbyn Pledges a “Cultural Renaissance” for Arts

Jeremy Corbyn has established a charter to support the arts, promising £1bn of new investment in a renewed Cultural Strategy.
The pop star Lily Allen, Emeli Sandé, film-maker Ken Loach, the actor Mark Rylance and many more attended the event at the Theatre Royal Stratford East.

“Every child, whatever their background, should be able to enjoy the fundamentals in life, and access to the arts is crucial to that,” said Sandé.
At a special event in London on Sunday, Corbyn committed to a “cultural renaissance” which will put the arts at the “heart of government”.
The Labour ‘Arts for All’ contract promises to give all of Britain greater access to culture. It is an extensive program of help for Britain’s specialties and cultures which will expand access and increase funding for the arts.
“The arts are a common inheritance that makes our society culturally richer and put a smile on all our faces. We must cherish them and protect them,” said Corbyn.
He added: “Labour’s national strategy for the arts will embrace our rich cultural heritage from William Shakespeare to Ben Okri, Mary Quant to Tim Berners-Lee, delivering a national cultural renaissance.”
The plan will also include £1 billion for building and upgrading libraries, museums and art galleries and spending £175 million a year on an arts pupil premium so that every primary school student can have access to the arts.
Research by the House of Commons library has demonstrated that libraries, exhibition halls and workmanship displays crosswise over England have had their financing cut by £640m since 2010.
