As tensions ramp up between the West and, Russia, fears are growing that proxy wars could develop into wider armed conflict. The UK and US already have ordered partial withdrawals from their embassies in Ukraine amid growing fears of an imminent Russian invasion of the former Soviet nation.
Is the US headed for another Civil War?
Is it really possible that America could face the possibility of civil war in the near future? It may seem unthinkable, and yet there’s much to worry about.
A 2021 national survey by pollster John Zogby found a plurality of Americans (46%) believed a future civil war was likely, 43% felt it was unlikely, and 11% were not sure. War seemed more likely for younger people (53%) than older ones (31%), and for those residing in the South (49%) and Central/Great Lakes region (48%) relative to those in the East (39%).
White House declared Ukraine invasion no longer ‘imminent’
The US government is no longer using the word ‘imminent’ in its narrative around the alleged Russian ‘invasion’ of Ukraine, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters, on Wednesday, explaining that it was sending an unintended message.
“I used it once. I think others have used that once, and we stopped using it because I think it sent a message that we weren’t intending to send, which was that we knew that President Putin had made a decision,” Psaki said at a press briefing.
“I would say the vast majority of times I’ve talked about it, I’ve said he could invade ‘at any time,’” she added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first public statements
Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first public statement on the situation at the Ukraine-Russia border in over a month and said the US and its allies of ratcheting up tensions and ignoring Russian security demands, including halting NATO’s expansion to Ukraine and other former Soviet countries. President Vladimir Putin said,
“I believe that the US, for example, does not care much about Ukraine’s safety, though they probably give it a thought in the background. But their main task is to contain Russia’s development. That is the problem. In this context, Ukraine is just a tool to reach this goal.”
