THE IMPACT OF SPEEDING ON YOUR CAR INSURANCE.

Seeing that light flash as you drive down a road can make you worry. Was it your car that got flashed or the car behind? Were you speeding? If it was you, what does that mean and what will happen?

Speeding: What does that mean for you?
Speed limits are there for very good reasons. They are there to keep yourselves, other road users and of course pedestrians as safe as possible. However, if you break the speed limit and are caught speeding that could lead to points on your licence and a fine. This can also have an impact on your car insurance premium.

How to tell if you’ve been caught speeding:
Sometimes it is very obvious as you may be pulled over by the police. They may just give you a verbal warning or they may give you a fixed penalty notice there and then. If the police deem your speeding to be particularly bad you may be ordered you to go to court. Find out more.

Or, you may see that dreaded flash from a camera. You would receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) and a Section 172 Notice in the post within 14 days.

A Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN)?
If you get a FPN you are given a choice to either plead “guilty” or “not guilty”. If you are guilty, you’ll get a £100 fine and 3 points on your licence, which will be in place for four years. Plead not guilty and you’ll have to go to court to make your case, however, this can lead to a bigger fine and more points so think wisely.Find out more about this in our blog here.

The impact on your car insurance
This depends on a number of different factors including your personal circumstances and your insurer as different car insurers will have different pricing policies in place.
Factors taken into account could include if you have any prior motoring offences. If you have points
on your licence already and the length of time you’ve been driving.
All of these will likely influence how much your insurer raises your premium.

Can I Avoid Points on my Licence?
In some cases, you may be able to avoid getting the fine and the points on your licence by taking a
speed awareness course, however, you can’t request this option yourself, it is up to the police.

Should I tell my insurer if I get points on my licence?
If you get any points on your licence, you need to inform your insurers are soon as possible.
