George Floyd’s Family Demand UN Intervention Over Humanitarian Crisis

Over 600 organizations stand beside George Floyd’s family in demanding United Nations investigations against police violence and the racist oppression in the US. Dipto Paul reports.

George Floyd’s brother, Philonise Floyd, along with his relatives Breonna Taylor, Philando Castile and Michael Brown submitted a statement to the UN to deal with “human rights crisis”.

American attorney, Benjamin Crump, has said: “George Floyd’s family and legal team have submitted an Urgent Appeal to the UN to intervene in the case of #GeorgeFloyd’s death, inc. encouraging the US government to press federal criminal charges against involved officers and making recommendations for systemic police reform”.

Philonise said: “I want people across the world and the leaders in the United Nations to see the video of my brother George Floyd, to listen to his cry for help, and I want them to answer his cry.”

Recently, Police violence has reached dangerous new levels as rubber bullets, tear gas, and pepper spray has been used against peaceful protesters across the country.

Addressing US President Donald Trump the family said: “Rather than using his position to serve as a force for calm and unity … has chosen to weaponise tension through his rhetoric”.

“The voice of the demonstrators must be heard. Their demand is that the endemic racism, hatred, fear and disparity are finally confronted,” added them.

George Floyd was laid to rest in a private funeral on June 9.
