It’s no surprise that Dune 2 is coming! A sequel to Dune is officially announced as the new film earned over $40million at the box office in its very opening weekend.
With releasing simultaneously in theaters and on streaming service HBO Max, Dune earned Warner Bros.’s largest opening weekend box office of 2021. So it resulted in the swift announcement that Dune: Part Two’s release date is set for October 20, 2023, nearly two years to the same day ‘Dune’ got released.
In a statement, Villeneuve said, ‘I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two. It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning.’
Villeneuve said on writing the sequel, ‘I’m writing (Part Two) now, and I feel like I’m eight years old again. That’s very uncommon for me. It’s the first time I’ve experienced it where I’m watching one of my movies, and I have a moment of deep gratitude, of deep joy, and I say, ‘Thank you, life, for having allowed me to bring that to the screen. I don’t know how other people will feel about it. But me? Denis Villeneuve when he was 14 years old? Thank you.’
‘Denis Villeneuve has crafted a film that is both visually extraordinary and emotionally transporting, as evidenced by its global success both critically and at the box office. We are thrilled to continue on this journey with Denis and his cast and crew and our partners at Legendary, and we can’t wait to bring the next chapter of this epic tale to theaters in October 2023’, said Toby Emmerich, chairman at Warner Bros. Picture Group.

The turbulent effects COVID-19 left on the film industry, Warner Bros.’s co-release strategy on HBO Max and changing audience viewing habits had cast a questionable light on the financial prospects of Dune. While some may have doubted the film’s economic potential, Villeneuve was certainly not held back by the dubious future of his franchise.
2023 is still a way off, but placeholder dates give some idea of the landscape of film releases. Dune: Part 2 will release exclusively to theaters on October 20, 2023.
