On Sunday 14 June, many took to the streets of Brooklyn for the largest demonstration for Black Trans lives in history. Tara Pilkington brings you the latest.
Dubbed the Brooklyn Liberation by demonstration organisers, the historic event featured speeches at the Brooklyn Museum followed by a silent march through the New York City borough through to Fort Greene Park.
The demonstration was organised in reaction to the tragic news of two Black trans women’s deaths which was first reported last Friday.
Dominique “Rem’mie” Fells and Riah Milton were two Black trans women who became victims of an “epidemic” of violence against Black trans women in particular.
The event featured speakers including writer and Trans Law Center national organizer Raquel Willis, Okra Project founder Ianne Fields Stewart, and Ceyenne Doroshow, the founder and executive director of Gays and Lesbians Living in Transgender Society (G.L.I.T.S.).
It has been reported that 15,000 people were in attendance at this demonstration.
Brooklyn Liberation was one of several events following weeks of protests with an emphasis on Black trans lives.
