The caretaker PM and ex-ministers of Lebanon have been charged with negligence for the deadly explosion that took place last summer. Anika Khan reports.
Prosecutor Fadi Sawan filed charges against the caretaker minister and three former ministers of Beirut over the negligence that caused the blast. Amongst the accused are former PM Hassan Diab, former finance minister Hassan Khalil, and Former ministers of public works, Youssef Fenianos and Ghazi Zaiter. 30 other security officials, port and customs officials have been detained as part of the ongoing investigation.

Beirut port explosion was one of the deadliest explosion in modern history killing over 200 people and injuring a thousand more. The massive blast was caused by the detonation of 2750 tones of ammonium nitrate which was stored unsafely in a port warehouse.

It was reported that the ammonium nitrate was in the warehouse for over 6 years. And although the head of Beirut port and Custom authority called out to remove the chemicals to a safe place, no such action was taken from the Lebanon government officials throughout the years.

Anger has been building up over the slow process in the investigation behind the case. The public demands answers and facts from the government and the officials involved.
