Banksy Shares New Artwork to Support Black Lives Matter

Banksy has shared a new artwork alongside a powerful heartfelt message to show his support for the Black Lives Matter movement following the death of George Floy. Puza Snigdha reports.

Banksy revealed the new artwork on his Instagram page where he addressed his followers directly, saying: “At first I thought I should just shut up and listen to black people about this issue.”

The artwork depicts the flag of the United States slowly torched by a candle that is part of a vigil for a black and silhouetted figure. He shared the artwork on Saturday saying, “it is the responsibility of whites to fix the system that blacks lack.”

The artist has said: “People of color are failing the system. The white system. Like a broken pipe flooding the apartment of people living downstairs. The faulty system makes their lives a misery, but it is not their job to repair it. They can’t, no one will let them into the upstairs apartment,”

“But why would I do that? It’s not their problem. It’s mine. People of colour are being failed by the system. The white system. Like a broken pipe flooding the apartment of the people living downstairs. This faulty system is making their life a misery, but it’s not their job to fix it. They can’t—no-one will let them in the apartment upstairs.”

Calling the systematic racism as “white problem,” he said, “If white people don’t fix it, someone will have to come upstairs and kick the door in.”
