Event recent Black women are now producing some of their most-listened-to songs by collaborating with other Black women. And they’re doing so while discussing sex, drugs, and female friendships. Between the late ’80s and early 2000s, Eve, Queen Latifah, Lil’ Kim, Trina, and Foxy Brown were among the first waves of successful women in hip-hop.

Missy Elliott


Missy Elliott is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. In the early-mid 1990s, She embarked on her music career with R&B girl group Sista. she launched her solo career on July 15, 1997, with her debut album Supa Dupa Fly, which produced the top 20 single “Sock It 2 Me”. Salt-N-Pepa made their band, including group members with Salt (Cheryl James), Pepa (Sandra Denton), and DJ Spinderella (Deidra Roper). They were signed to Next Plateau Records and released their single “Push It” in 1987, which hit number one in three countries and became a top 10 or top 20 hits in various countries. Their debut album Hot, Cool & Vicious sold more than 1 million copies in the US, making them the first female rap act to achieve gold and platinum status.

Philadelphia-born rapper Eve became six UK Top 10 hits between 2001 and 2007. She released her debut album In 1999 and became number-one on the Billboard 200, making her the third female rapper in the world. As an actress, Eve is very popular. Eve has received multiple accolades throughout her career, like a Grammy Award, BET Award, MTV Video Music Award, Teen Choice Award, and two Daytime Emmy Award nominations. Spin also named her one of the ’30 Greatest Female Rappers Ever.

Nicki Minaj placed her name in the top popular position with 12 UK Top 10 singles. Nicki’s Top 10 hits have been streamed a combined 750,000,000 times in the UK. Minaj is one of the best-selling female artists of all time, with 100 million records sold worldwide. She also achieved eight American Music Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, twelve BET Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, a Brit Award, a Guinness World Record, and a Billboard Women in Music Game Changer Award. She also appeared as a judge on the twelfth season of American Idol in 2013.

Cardi B is known for her belligerent flow and candid lyrics, which have received severe admiration. She is the highest certified female rapper of all time on the RIAA’s Top Artists ranking. She also appeared the ten highest-certified female artists. She is one of the female rappers with the most billion streamers on Spotify and became the first to top the Billboard Global 200. She achieved a Grammy Award, eight Billboard Music Awards, five Guinness World Records, five American Music Awards, eleven BET Hip Hop Awards, and two ASCAP Songwriter of the Year awards. Forbes recognized her as one of the most influential female rappers of all time. Even Billboard honored her as Woman of the Year.
