World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) from 2003 . WHO has been co-sponsor of the day.
The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people die by suicide each year across the world, that’s one person every 40 seconds. In Australia more than 2800 people die each year with latest figures In the UK and ROI, more than 6,000 people die by suicide a year – an average of 18 a day.
People who are feeling low or suicidal often feel worthless and think that no-one cares. Small things like hearing from friends or family, feeling listened to or just being told that ‘it’s ok to talk’ can make a huge difference. Aiming “Working Together to Prevent Suicide”, events and activities for World Suicide Prevention Day include:

  • The launch of new government initiatives to prevent suicide.
  • Conferences, open days, educational seminars or public lectures.
  • Media programs promoting suicide awareness and prevention.
  • Memorial services or candlelight ceremonies to remember those who died from suicide.
  • Organizing cultural or spiritual events, fairs or exhibitions.
  • Launches of publications about suicide awareness and prevention.
  • Training courses about suicide and depression awareness.

Many of these initiatives are celebrated in various countries worldwide. Some of these events and activities are held at a local level, while others are nation-wide. For more info click at wspd.org.au.
