White House Counsel Don McGahn will resign from the Trump administration this year, the latest high-profile exit of the top members of the president’s team.
The US president was reported to have been troubled by the recent disclosure that McGahn had cooperated extensively with Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference.
Mr Trump did not indicate who would succeed Mr McGahn, who had extraordinary access to the president during some of the most controversial moments of his tenure so far. He is expected to leave his post this fall. McGahn has taken a leading role in handling Kavanaugh’s nomination.
“White House Counsel Don McGahn will be leaving his position in the fall, shortly after the confirmation (hopefully) of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. I have worked with Don for a long time and truly appreciate his service!” Trump wrote.
Trump announced while McGahn intended to step down an open secret in the White House. He was “surprised” by the timing of Trump’s announcement, the Washington Post reported, citing an unnamed person close to McGahn.
