US Tv star and the film director, Penny Marshall has died peacefully at the age of 75, in her Hollywood Hills home on Monday night because of intricacies from diabetes.
Michelle Bega, a spokeswoman for the family has confirmed the news to the media. A rep for the family says “Our family is heartbroken over the passing.”
Marshall was famous for a long-running sitcom TV series “Laverne & Shirley” and this led her to be the director of the film “Big” and “A League of Their Own,” which was big hit and ranked in the US box office.
Crowd-pleasing movie Big’s success made Marshall the first woman to direct a film that made more than $100m. She will be remembered for this work with the Oscar-winning actor Hanks, a story about a boy who grows to adulthood overnight.
“A League of Their Own,” the 1992 comedy about the women’s professional baseball league begun during World War II, also crossed $100 million, making $107.5 million domestically.
“As an actress, her work on ‘Laverne & Shirley'” broke ground featuring blue-collar women entertaining America in prime time, she was a comedic natural with a photographic memory and an instinct for slapstick,” said her family member.
Marshall is getting tribute from the fellow film-makers and performers also.
“I loved Penny. I grew up with her. She was born with a great gift. She was born with a funnybone and the instinct of how to use it. I was very lucky to have lived with her and her funny bone. I will miss her,” wrote Rob Reiner, director.
“Goodbye, Penny. Man, did we laugh a lot! Wish we still could. Love you. Hanx,” said Hanks.
A celebration of Marshall’s life will be held at a later date to be announced, the family said.
