HBO’s hit sci-fi drama Westworld has been renewed for a third season.
The acclaimed series, which has aired two of its ten episodes for Season 2, continues the exploits of the robotic Hosts as they have become aware of it and plan a revolution in revenge for the abuse they have suffered from park attendees.
Created for television by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, based on the film written by Michael Crichton, Westworld is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the birth of a new form of life on Earth.
The show debuted on HBO in October 2016 to become the network’s most-watched freshman series ever. It returned for its ten-episode second season Sunday, April 22. In Season 2, the androids have revolted against their human creators.
It’s definitely official that both Evan Rachel Wood and Thandie Newton will be returning, because there has been a confirmation that they would be paid the same amount for their work as their male co-stars during season three.
Westworld was the most-nominated series at the 2017 Emmy Awards, and took home five awards at the show last September. It’s not much of a surprise that Westworld is one of HBO’s most attention-grabbing shows, but it does make us wonder just how much more complex it can get in next season.
While Season 3 has now been confirmed, the “when” still remains a mystery. Due to the long and complicated writing process, creators Nolan and Lisa wanted to finish all ten scripts from Season 2 before actually going into production. This kept the show on hiatus for about a year and a half between the first two seasons.
For now, we know Westworld will be back for season 3 most likely in 2020 and what happens after that will likely be determined shortly after the premiere.
