hammer practice on the guitar fret board:

  • Start slow and focus on accuracy. Don’t try to go too fast at first. Make sure you’re hitting the right notes cleanly before you speed up.Guitar fret board
  • Use the right fingering. Make sure your fingers are curved and relaxed, and that you’re using the tips of your fingers to fret the notes.
  • Hammer with your fingertip. Don’t press down with your whole finger. Just use a quick, tapping motion to hammer the note onto the fret.
  • Practice on all six strings. Don’t just focus on the higher strings. The lower strings can be more challenging to hammer on, so it’s important to practice them as well.
  • Use a metronome. This will help you keep your timing consistent.
  • Vary your exercises. There are many different hammer-on exercises you can do. Find a few that you like and practice them regularly.
  • Be patient. It takes time to develop good hammer-on technique. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results immediately. Just keep practicing and you’ll eventually get it.

Guitar’s 12 Notes

  • The crew: There are 7 natural notes (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) and 5 sharps/flats (adding sharps or flats raises/lowers a note by half a step).
  • Fret board map: Each string is a mini-keyboard with 12 notes (frets). Open string is the lowest note, frets raise the pitch.
  • Sharps & flats twins: A# and Bb are the same note, just called differently. Think “brunch” vs “late breakfast.”
  • 12th fret magic: It’s the same note as the open string, an octave higher. The fretboard “resets” there.
  • Mastering the 12: Learn the notes on one string, then apply the pattern to others. Practice, practice, practice!

1st finger exercises for ukulele

  • Single-string: Focus on one string at a time. Play the open string, then fret the first fret with your index finger, then the second fret, and so on. Repeat this pattern going back down the string.
  • Across strings: Play the open A string, then fret the second fret of the E string with your index finger, then the second fret of the C string, and finally the second fret of the G string. Repeat this pattern going back down the strings.
  • Spider: Start with your index finger on the second fret of the A string. Play this note, then move your finger to the third fret of the E string, then the fourth fret of the C string, and finally the fifth fret of the G string. Repeat this pattern, “walking” your finger down the frets.
  • Chromatic: Play each fret of a single string, one at a time, using your index finger. This will help you develop finger independence and accuracy.
