The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has expressed its concern over the involvement of children in the world of bullfighting. It has urged Spain to ban children from attending bullfighting events and bullfighting schools, stating that it could prove harmful to them.
“In order to prevent the harmful effects of bullfighting on children, the committee recommends that the state party prohibit the participation of children under 18 years of age as bullfighters and as spectators in bullfighting events,” the Committee stipulated in a meeting with a Spanish delegation.
According to the Committee children in Spain shouldn’t be exposed to the violence of the world of bullfighting. Bullfighting is a very violent and bloody affair. In the bullrings the bullfighter faces off a bull and continuously stabs it until it has lost so much blood it dies.
In the meeting with the Spanish delegation next month, the representatives stated that bullfighting activities were regulated by each of their autonomous regions. In Catalonia, for example, bullfighting is illegal.
After extensive talks, the Spanish delegation vowed to take the Committee’s recommendations into account.
