Taslima Nasreen
When we are talking about fundamentalist, Taslima Nasrin is a worth mentioning. The only female writer from Bangladesh, a feminist as well as a critic who created sensation with her bold writing.
Her writing include female oppression and graphic language. When she criticised Islamic philosophy in her book Lajja (1993), a radical fundamentalist organisation called the Council of Islamic Soldiers offered a bounty for her head. The following year she fled Bangladesh to West Bengal. Concerns for her safety culminated in the author going into hiding in New Delhi then in 2015 she moved to the US. Some of her most popular books to read are “Lojja”, “Shorom”, “Shodh”, “Ko”, “Amar Meyebela” etc.
Leo Tolstoy
This Russian novelist is popular for his critical and strong view of political understanding. Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy is widely regarded as being one of the greatest writers of all time. His most famous works are War and Peace and Anna Karenina. It was his time in the army and trips to Europe that led to Tolstoy becoming a Christian Anarchist. Vehemently opposed to state control, he argued that peaceful anarchy could only be brought about by non-violent revolution. His stance is explained in his essay On Anarchy.
Arundhati Roy
Arundhati Roy is an Indian author best known for her novel The God of Small Things, which won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 1997 and became the biggest-selling book by a non-expatriate Indian author. She is also a political activist involved in human rights and environmental causes. Recently in 2017, she published “The Ministry of Utmost Happiness” which is a bestseller in Amazon and all over the world. Margaret Atwood
Margaret Eleanor Atwood is a Canadian poet, novelist, literary critic, essayist, inventor, teacher and environmental activist. She has published seventeen books of poetry, sixteen novels, ten books of non-fiction, eight collections of short fiction, eight children’s books, and one graphic novel, as well as a number of small press editions in poetry and fiction. Atwood and her writing have won numerous awards and honors including the Man Booker Prize, Arthur C. Clarke Award, Governor General’s Award, Franz Kafka Prize, and the National Book Critics and PEN Center USA Lifetime Achievement Awards.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
This Nigerian author’s work drew extensively on the Biafran war in Nigeria during the late 1960s. She has written the novels Purple Hibiscus, Half of a Yellow Sun , and Americanah, the short story collection The Thing Around Your Neck, and the book-length essay We Should All Be Feminists. Her most recent book, Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions, was published in March 2017. Along with other Awards, the writer won Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for best book in Africa as well as best first book overall.
