The mighty city London is full of entertainment and has so many free things to do on weekend. As the city is full of world-class free museums, incredible free exhibitions and attractions that won’t cost you a penny to enter, you can have all your fun. Here are a whole load of incredible and totally free things to do in London.
Visit Artist Rooms: Jenny Holzer at Tate Modern
Stood at the exhibition surrounded by words in this small new display, what strikes you is both the power and powerlessness of language. The first room is covered in collected statements, things like ‘the land belongs to no one’, ‘women love power’, ‘you should study as much as possible’. They’re sentences presented and said as truth, advice, things to live your life by. The only works that feel firm in their definition are the ones based on testimony from the Iraq War; here, lived experiences usurp interpretation. But everything else – the LEDs, the marble benches, the plaques – just makes you query everything you read.
Take a Tour to British Museum
Visit London’s busy home for ancient finds and cultural treasures from across the centuries, discovered across the world. As soon as you walk into the magnificent glass-roofed Great Court you can hear the buzz of students, tourists and Londoners who have just popped in for lunch among the treasures. The galleries are divided by location and periods in history – Ancient Iran, Greece, China from 5000BC onwards, Roman Britain and so on – and if you’re overwhelmed by the choice, follow one of the free 20-minute spotlight tours led by the guides every Friday, or check one of the free exhibitions dedicated to a specific theme or works of art.
Visit Art Exibition Haegue Yang: Tracing Movement at Camberwell
This free exhibition is going to take place at South London Gallery , Camberwell from April 2 to May 26. The works hanging up include the ‘Trustworthies’ series, collages of graph paper, envelopes, shiny foil and other bits and pieces. In their geometry and angular patterning, they’re not a million miles away from the Emma Kunz works currently on show at the Serpentine. There’s also the ‘Carsick Drawings’, wiggly lines made in an attempt to draw while in a car, and the ‘Cutting Board Prints’, created from the juice of various veg and spices on sale in Singapore.
Take Part at The Boat Race
The 2019 Boat Race will take place on Sunday April 7, when you can watch crews from Oxford and Cambridge go head-to-head in eight-oared rowing boats across the Thames. The women’s race is up first at 2:15pm, followed by the men’s race an hour later at 3:15pm. The key tube stations for spectators to use are Putney Bridge, Hammersmith and Kew Gardens, or use Putney, Barnes Bridge, Mortlake or Chiswick rail stations. The race is completely free to take part.
Visit Borough Market
Borough Market is one of London’s more established haunts. Located under a maze of Victorian railway arches and open Monday to Saturday, Borough Market is stuffed with lovely food and food-lovers, featuring cuisine from all corners of the world. It offers everything you need for a memorable grab-and-go breakfast or lunch, but is also a good place for a simple wander.
