Things to Know about XR’s Fossil Fuels Protests

Activists of the Extinction Rebellion (XR) close down two different bridges in London. XR is protesting in demand of shutting down fossil fuels-related new projects.

XR is a global environmental movement. The movement is a peaceful one to influence the management to understand the significance of the climate crisis. They are working with a view to curbing the danger of socio-ecological collapses, as well as saving biodiversity. Recently activists of XR have started their mass protest against new fossil fuel projects. They had shut down some major points in London on their second day of the procession. Supporters of the direct action climate group occupied Vauxhall Bridge and Lambeth Bridge, two traffic arteries linking the north and south of the city, after marching from Hyde Park.

Let’s know about the protest and the claim of the activists-

Ongoing protest

XR activists have shut down a couple of main bridges in London, and it is part of newly developed public protests. The main demand of this movement is to force the concerned authorities to take action immediately to stop the new project on fossil fuels. Supporters and activists of different climate groups have occupied Lambeth and Vauxhall bridges.

The movement

At Buckingham Gate, supporters and protestors sprayed red hand signs on different fossil fuels firms. The protestors also stopped Oxford Circus by arranging a mass sit-in program, and thousands of climate campaigners participated in the movement. The entry point of Buncefield terminal is blocked by a group of 40 protestors. And another group of 40 protestors mounted on the loading pipework at the Grays terminal. One of the activists says that though he is frightened of heights, he is comparatively more frightened of his future. They want the government to stop providing new fossil fuel licenses, the fight will go on until the government starts taking action.

The April rebellion

XR has a plan to protest in London for a whole week. The shutting down of the bridges is included in the April rebellion as well. The way people are getting involved in the movement, it seems like positive changes may come soon.

Just Stop Oil

Along with the XR protest, Just Stop Oil is also targeting different fossil fuel terminals. They are doing it for 10 consecutive days to disrupt the fossil fuel infrastructure of the UK. The campaigns of just Stop Oil are as organized as XR’s movements.

The After effect

The Metropolitan Police are concerned as the movement has stopped two significant bridges in London. They are trying their best to minimize the impact of the movement on the traffic. They are collaborating with their policing partners to decrease the interruption.

Police are being accused of treating the protesters badly while searching for them. Some of the protestors are traumatized due to the ongoing harassment. About 800 campaigners are arrested because of their peaceful involvement in the movement.

People are showing courage because they want to change the ongoing system so that they can dream of a better place to live. The government must acknowledge the problems and act accordingly for a better future.
