The Great Wave

Co-producing with the Tricycle Theatre, the National Theatre presents The Great Wave, a new play by Francis Turnly.
An epic new thriller, The Great Wave tells the story of two teenage sisters, Hanako and Reiko, who are caught up in a storm on a Japanese beach. Reiko survives, but Hanako is lost to the sea.
However, their mother is absolutely sure that her missing daughter is still alive, so the family tragedy soon takes on a global political dimension.
Set in Japan and North Korea, Francis Turnly’s thriller is directed by Indhu Rubasingham. Turnly is a playwright, radio dramatist and screenwriter, with previous writing credits in the Birmingham Rep (A Samurai in Soho), Courtyard Theatre, Jackson’s Lane, Watford Palace and most recently Finborough Theatre (Harajuku Girls).
He was the winner of the Channel 4 playwright bursary in 2015 and as a result was writer in resident at the Tricycle Theatre in 2016, which ended with him winning the Catherine Johnson Award. He is currently developing a number of ideas for TV shows, including a series treatment with The Forge Productions.
The play will be shown at the National Theatre from 10 March to 14 April. For more information and to book tickets, visit their website here.
