The First Ever Afrobeats Musical Premiers in Manchester

The unique Afrobeats musical Oliva Tweest: The AfroMusical is finally making a comeback in the form of an unforgettable one-night performance at Manchester’s Opera House on 9 October.
The musical has previously sold out West End at the Lyric Theatre in 2013, and a short-run at the legendary Hackney Empire in 2014, showed up as a one-off special at the 2016 Lagos Theatre Festival, supported by the British Council, and in a week-long development residency at The Barbican.
“It’s a dream come true for me to see the show going on tour with well-renowned venue partners. We have been given so much support and encouragement to get to this point,” PureYinkz says.
Created by PureYinkz (Yinka Ayinde), 2016 Sky Academy Arts Scholarship recipient, the Oliva Tweest is captivating musical, following the ambitions of London hustler and club-promoter Tobi, who yearns to shake off his shady reputation and move up in the world.
In an effort to attract his idol and Afrobeats legend D’Banje, he plans the ultimate concert , naming it after the musician’s global hit ‘Oliver Twist.’ But because the landlord of his chosen concert venue intends to convert the building into a church, Tobi is forced to disguise his true intentions.
Oliva Tweest: The AfroMusical explores important themes around self-discovery, the true meaning of success, and African culture in the diaspora, backed by an amazing cast of consummate performers, household cameos, acclaimed dancers, a clever mix of new songs created especially for the musical.
The universal tale of love versus ambition is supported by exhilarating and high-energy choreography, dazzling costumes, and some of the biggest Afrobeats hits from the likes of D’banj, Wizkid, Maleek Berry, Afro B and Tiwa Savage.
Oliva Tweest: The AfroMusical comes back to Manchester’s Opera House on 9 October. For more information, visit the website here.
