The Atlantic Project

The Atlantic Project is a pilot for a new international festival of contemporary art taking place in public contexts and outdoor locations across Plymouth, UK, from 28 September to 21 October.
Curated by Tom Trevor, the project has been developed as a core partnership between ‘The Box’ and the ‘University of Plymouth’. The Atlantic Project is part of ‘Horizon’, supported by ‘Arts Council England’s’ ‘Ambition for Excellence’ fund and ‘Plymouth City Council’.
This event will feature artist like Nilbar Güreş, Tommy Støckel, Liu Chuang, Yan Wang Preston, Hito Steyerl, Vermeir & Heiremans, Kiluanji Kia Henda, Donald Rodney, Postcommodity, Ryoji Ikeda, Carl Slater, SUPERFLEX, Khadija von Zinnenburg Carroll, Chang Jia, Jane Grant and John Matthias, Ursula Biemann, Bryony Gillard and more to announce.
This year the theme of this event will be “After the Future”. The main concern of this theme will be to carry the legacies of utopian imaginaries like Francis Drake to Charles Darwin, James Cook to the Mayflower Pilgrims who have come to define our contemporary world.
With the acceleration of globalisation and the prolonged impact of austerity, the century-long obsession with the concept of progress that informed this modernist reconstruction of the city has seemingly ground to a halt. Without a clear vision of the future, the question arises, how will the role of the artist function and change drifting in the wake of utopian imaginaries.
