The Marvel property Spider-Man is set to return to Disney’s MCU after Disney negotiates a new deal with Sony.
Back on August 20th, Marvel’s massive fanbase were outraged after Disney failed to renegotiate a deal with Sony over their Spider-Man film rights. It meant that the expansive MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) was now without their iconic, friendly neighbourhood superhero.
Disney requested a greater share of the financial rights to the film (they asked for a 50/50 split, though they previously only had 5%). Considering Spider-Man is a major property for Sony (their recent Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a ground-breaking success) it is no surprise they found the deal unacceptable.
Sony Pictures CEO and Chairman, Tony Vinciquerra, claimed that “the door was closed” on Spider-Man’s return to the MCU. The outcry from fans was loud and hashtags such as #saveSpidey began trending. But the tides only began to turn when Spider-Man actor Tom Holland himself entered the fray.
According the Hollywood Reporter, after the fallout from the initial deal, Holland personally lobbied the heads of Disney and Sony to come to a more pleasing agreement for MCU fans. After more negotiations, both parties agreed to keep Spidey in the MCU for two more films: the final film in the Spider-Man solo films (slated for July 2021 release) and one more unnamed instalment.
Holland’s social media subtly expressed his dejection that his beloved character was leaving the MCU. When he returned, his approach was far more overt. He posted an Instagram video capturing an iconic moment of Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, where the main character says to his adoring workers “I’m not leaving!”.
Tom Holland became a real Peter Parker in that moment, acting as the underdog hero fighting against greedy giants.
