Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

Director: André Øvredal
Casts: Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Zajur, Natalie Ganzhorn and More.
This horror film is based on the children’s book series of the same name by Alvin Schwartz. This film isn’t anything particularly new in terms of story links to the kind of ‘body horror’ and monster design, but the content is handled in a very interesting and unique way. Set back in 1968, the story is about a group of teenagers who, while exploring the old abandoned Bellows family mansion, find a book written by the young Sarah Bellows. They find collections of scary stories, and slowly discover the stories are becoming reality, especially once people start to disappear with the same names. These could easily be ‘Goosebumps’ or ‘Tales from the Crypt’ baddies, but the presentation sets them apart. Listed as “The Toe Monster” a shrivelled corpse of a woman that wants her toe back, “The Jangly Man” a strange creature that can contort its body into horrific and unnatural shapes, and even “Harold the Scarecrow”, who is just plain unsettling.
