Peopls of Roman are voting this weekend whether they want to redefine marriage as only being between a man and a woman rather than “two spouses.”
Teodora Ion-Rotaru says, “The idea is to distract public attention from corruption allegations, and they are doing it at the expense of the LGBT community.”
Civil society group called the Coalition for the family have brought 30 percent turnout rate to the referendum, it gathered 3 millions signatures to generate the vote and said the gender-neutral term “spouse” could see gay couples win the right to marry in the future.
A 35-year-old music teacher, volunteer Roxana Costeanu, “We grew up with a mother and a father and we feel this is the most appropriate structure,” saying this she ripped off a piece of sticky tape for a poster.
“This referendum is essentially asking people to approve discriminating against their neighbours, colleagues, friends and family members,rainbow families, diverse family groups, loving families living in Romania right now are all threatened by this proposal.” said Trans and Intersex Association.
One potential upside is that with same-sex marriage ruled out.
